How to Clean a CPR Manikin

Mannequins are essential tools used to teach people the life-saving technique of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). According to the Centers for Disease Control, no one has ever contracted an infectious disease through the use of a CPR mannequin, but most training organizations take precautions to clean and disinfect their mannequins. Follow these steps after each class.

Step 1

Remove any clothing on the mannequin and set those articles aside. Inspect the mannequin for wear and tear. Repair or discard a mannequin with large cracks or tears in its plastic surfaces.

Step 2

Scrub the mannequin with warm, soapy water and brushes. Rinse with fresh water.

Step 3

Soak the mannequin with a bleach solution made from 1/4 cup household bleach per gallon of water for at least 10 minutes. Discard the solution.

Step 4

Rinse the mannequin well with fresh water. Dry the mannequin and swab it thoroughly with alcohol to help kill any remaining bacterial or fungal growth.

Step 5

Wash the mannequin's clothes and hair once a month or whenever they are visibly dirty. You can use a mild laundry detergent or liquid soap.

Tips & Warnings

  • During class, assign students in pairs to a single mannequin to lessen the risk of contamination. Keep some disinfectant wipes on hand for use during class.
  • During a class, don't allow students to eat or drink to avoid the chance that food-borne bacteria will be transferred to the mannequin.
